High School Reading

What strategies are you using in your secondary classroom to get students connected to their nonfiction reading in every subject area?

Ron Ritchart, Mark Church, and Karin Morrison offer several strategies in their book, Making Thinking Visible.  One suggestion is using the 4 C's: connections, challenge, concepts, and changes (p. 140).

  • Connections:  What connections do you draw between the text and your own life or your other learning?
  • Challenge:  What ideas, positions, or assumptions do you want to challenge or argue within the text?
  • Concepts:  What key concepts or ideas do you think are important and worth holding on to from the text?
  • Changes:  What changes in attitudes, thinking, or action are suggested by the text, either for you or others?
